Below are the commonly asked questions we hear from our community of yogis. You may well be coming into the
studio for the first time or you simply want to learn more about our style of yoga and what we are all about at THoY!
I have never done yoga before, let alone
hot power vinyasa yoga−what can I expect?
The great thing about this style of yoga is that it is accessible to anyone. It’s not about what you look like or whether or not you can touch your toes, the most important thing is that you feel good and do what you can. All of our teachers will give you the options to modify your poses to the level that is most suited to your practice. Whilst some classes are more challenging, we offer classes for all levels. If you’re unsure what class to choose, just ask us!
Why do you heat the studio?
Practicing in our infrared heated studio allows you to sweat out unwanted toxins from your body, leaving you feeling cleansed from the inside out. There are countless benefits to practicing in this environment, one of them being that you can stretch to your edge in a safe and comfortable way which will allow you to enjoy a challenging but effective yoga practice.
We have found that another great benefit to practicing yoga in the infrared heat is its healing quality to existing injuries. Many of our students have experienced long term discomfort and pain shift out of their bodies after a few months of practicing with us.
Should I start with a basics class?
If you are coming into the studio at a beginners level we would always advise to take a few fundamentals classes first. This is the perfect way to slow things down a little, understand our studio sequence and learn the basic alignment principles that will give you the confidence to walk into one of our all levels classes. We also think its a great idea to step back into a fundamentals class now and again as its always nice to get back to basics.
How often do I need to come to enjoy the benefits?
This is totally up to you. Yoga practice requires discipline and commitment just like everything in life. It’s very simple, consistency is the key to success.
You will certainly experience some benefits if you practice just once a week, practice 2-3 times a week and you will soon see and feel the transformation this practice brings to your life. Practise more than 4 times a week and a new way of being is possible, just come and experience it for yourself.
What should I wear to class?
You can practice in anything from your gym clothes to specific yoga clothing. We are selling a few brands of clothing within the studio such as Onzie, Lululemon and Ohmme.
How hot is the studio?
The temperature in the studio will range from 25-32°c. Our infrared heating system will heat objects, i.e. your body, and it will feel like you are practicing yoga outside on a sunny day with the added benefit of a fresh air ventilation system running through the studio. Our yin classes and Yoga Nidra will be much cooler than the rest of the weekly schedule.
What happens if I am late for class?
You can join a class up to when the class starts. After this time, you will not be allowed to join, as it disrupts other students and is not safe to join if you have missed the start. We have a 2 hour cancellation policy at the studio, if you need to cancel your class you should jump online before the 2 hour window. If you cancel within 2 hours of the class start time, you will be charged a late cancel fee of £8.00. If you have a class pass, you will lose a class.
A ‘No Show’ (Failure to turn up for a class at all without prior cancellation) will incur the following: £18 fee charged to your card or account.
Can I still practice with an injury?
Yes, you certainly can and we encourage students to continue their yoga during these times, you just need to listen to your body in a way that prevents any further injury. We really like the idea that this yogic journey should be a healing practice so you can be injury free and enjoy your experience with us. What we have come to learn over the years is that an injury can become a very good teacher as it slows us down and we can appreciate all the modifications of the Hot Power Vinyasa practice. Just make sure you speak to your doctor first and notify the teacher of your injury.
Is it OK to come to class if I am pregnant?
We would always advise you to speak with your doctor before embarking on your practice with us. We do have pregnancy yoga on the schedule (Mondays 5.45 – 6.45pm) and most of our teachers would be happy and able to explain to you what you should and shouldn’t be doing in class. Heat is not recommended especially if you are in your first trimester. We have had many students continue to practice all the way through their pregnancy but we would suggest you do the pregnancy yoga classes and stick to the basics classes outside of these using modifications.
Do your classes teach yoga philosophy?
All of our classes at THoY bring a conversation around the way in which we live our lives moment to moment and how this impacts our body, mind and spirit. All of our teachers like to share how yoga has positively impacted their journey and we would like to think you can have your own experience and take from the classes what resonates with you in your life. Simply connecting to your breath and spending 45, 60, 75 or 90 minutes with yourself on the mat is a great starting point to positive change. So if your practice is only a physical one that’s great, if you are on a journey of personal growth that is also a great way to be. At the end of the day yoga is about opening the heart and living as authentically as we possibly can.
